Your Chamber Working For Local Businesses

This week the Great American Shoot Out basketball tournament is in town. NCAA College Coaches attend to scout out potential recruits to their schools. The Chamber helps to co-ordinate the food for the coaches Hospitality Room. We use Chamber member restaurants to provide the food and drinks for this. Some things are donated and others are bought at a discounted price to make this happen. We will be serving over 1,400 meals in three days and we have put over $8,000 into our local businesses in the process. This is just a small part of the Economic Impact that GASO has on our local economy. Our hotels, restaurants and local businesses will be busy and filled with people in town for the weekend.

To sum it all up, Shop Local because your Chamber Staff truly does. Stay Safe, Shop Local and Support Local Businesses!

“911 Evening of Remembrance”
20th Anniversary of 911

Thursday, September 9th, 6:30 PM
Hilton Garden Inn, Duncanville

9/11/2001 – 9/11/2021

It’s hard to believe that it has been twenty years since that tragic day that changed America. We were attacked on our own soil and thousands of people were murdered that day. Do you still remember where you were on that September morning? “I’ll Never Forget.”

Last year due to Covid-19 we had to cancel our “911 Evening of Remembrance” in person. It was the hardest event that I had to cancel last year. We did produce a video last year but it wasn’t the same as being in person. I’m excited to announce that we have a great program lined up for this year. Sgt. Ross Dobelbower is coming back to share more of his thoughts and how 911 affected and changed his life.

911 Video Link

It will be a night that you will always remember. Monica Saldivar will be back with us to sing and our Bagpiper Steve Pruitt will also be as well. We will have our Police Honor Guard, our Police and Fire Chiefs, Retired Fire Chief Terry Webb and Chaplain Dave George as part of the program. I look forward to seeing you there this year for the 20th Anniversary of the Day that our Country stood still. “Never Forget.”

Golf Tournament is Postponed Once Again

24th Annual Golf Classic
Moved to Monday, July 26th
Players Register to Play by Clicking Here

We must inform you that the Golf Tournament is POSTPONED once again. If it was just a matter of the rain and golf we would attempt to get the tournament in and around the rain and possible lightning. But the Golf Club is still undergoing their renovations and their dining room is not completed. That means that we would have to have the Southern Buffet for dinner outdoors on the patio. The last time I checked Fried Chicken, Chicken Fried Steak, and Biscuits don’t go well with watered down gravy!!!

I apologize for the 2nd postponement but we can predict things like the weather.

Our new date for the tournament will be pushed back to Monday, July 26th.

Dad, You Will Always Be My Hero

My Dad was and always will be my hero. Much more so than any athlete or actor could ever be. I have had people to ask me why and here is my answer. He was a great role model and the epitome of what a great Father should be. He was a great provider for his family, he was a Christian man, he was a great husband to my Mom, he taught us values by walking the walk and he loved his family. What else could you ask for? He served his Country in the Navy and I followed in his footsteps. He was taken from us at the early age of 69 by Mesothelioma Cancer but I talk to him still whenever I need direction.

If you haven’t spoken to your father in a while for any reason at all, change that this year. Call your Dad or better yet go see him. Hug him and tell him you love him, you will not regret doing so. I’m forever proud of my Dad, the Man that he was and Proud to be called Stephen “Paul” named after him. I love you Paul Martin.

Always Stay Positive

Sometimes in life, we think that things are tough and we get upset or down about them. I was watching America’s Got Talent on television this week and I saw a 30 year old young lady nicknamed “Nightbirde” who changed my thinking about myself and life. I’ve had a few aches and pains here recently and not really happy about them. This young lady beautifully sang an original song named “It’s Okay.” The judges, the audience and myself were in tears. She is a three time cancer survivor and she now only has a 2% chance of survival. Yes 2%. She has cancer in her lungs, her spine and her liver but you would never know this when you see her smile and hear her talk. Just before Simon hit the golden buzzer for her she said, “You can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore before you decide to be happy.” As she was leaving the stage she said that “2% is not 0%” and smiled as she said it.

When we think that our lives are tough, look around at the world and realize that God has blessed us greatly. She has given me a quote that I will never forget.

Schools Out for the Summer

Summertime means a lot of different things to different families. Our Teachers get a well deserved break from all of their students but those students are now children that parents have to worry about on a daily basis. Some students are looking for summer jobs. If you or your business has an opening or needs to hire part-time workers then let us know if we can help you find the person that you are looking for. Restaurants are really needing people to go to work and fill their vacancies. Your Chamber can help.

Also if you have any information about FREE events for students this summer, we can help you share those as well. Call the Chamber at 972-780-4990 and let us know how we can help. Everyone be safe and have a happy summer break.

The Sacrifice of Others

As we approach Memorial Day weekend, I ask the question of how can we keep our community great? We are so blessed to live in a country where we have the freedom of speech and opinion. Everyone’s speech and opinion will not be accepted by all, but if the intention is not to harm or disrespect others, I encourage us to simply agree to disagree. SIMPLY…AGREE… TO… DISAGREE.

This weekend, we should reflect on the sacrifice of our fallen heroes and remember that they are unable to enjoy the freedoms that they fought for. We should respectfully not sweat the small stuff. Let us be grateful for what we DO have. Pass on your gratitude to your community. We are the CITY OF CHAMPIONS!

Have A Safe Memorial Day, In Remembrance
Dr. Danielle R. Franklin
