City services, departments aim to boost quality of life

The City of Duncanville was incorporated in 1947 and operates under a council-manager form of government - the most popular form of municipal government in the United States.

Under Duncanville's council-manager form of government, five single member district council members represent the people in their geographic districts.

One other council member is elected at-large as is the mayor to represent all citizens.

The council hires a city manager, who is responsible for administering and coordinating municipal operation and programs on a daily basis.

The city council also appoints the city judge and citizens who serve on boards and commissions. Additionally, the council plays a major role in formulating the annual budget and in making decisions on city policy.

In 2002, voters approved a referendum that gave the mayor a vote.

The city is comprised of seven departments: fire, police, economic development, general government, finance, public works and community services.

All of the departments are responsible for providing outstanding city services that provide the high standard of quality of life the residents have come to know.

The police and fire departments are friendly and well respected as are all the organizations in Duncanville.

The Duncanville police are quick to respond to calls and able to handle any situation. In addition, they are polite and kind to the public.

Their demeanor equates into one of the lowest crime rates in Texas.

The police combine the newest technology including laptop computers in patrol cars, with a number of programs like Citizens Police Academy, Citizens on Patrol and Neighborhood Crime Watch exemplifying the department's desire to uphold public safety and quality service.

The Duncanville Fire Department epitomizes its motto, "Protecting Live and Property with Pride and Tradition."

The department is one of the most well trained, efficient operations in the nation.

Two fire stations house the highly trained firefighters and paramedic staff.

The Citizens Fire Academy gives civilians an opportunity to see the inside workings of the fire department.

By learning skills such as CPR, first aid and basic firefighting procedures, residents can learn more about the department and understand and respect what they do.

Both of the police and fire departments boast exceptional response times at an average of three minutes.

Creating a better-looking city is something Duncanville has worked hard to achieve.

As a member of Keep Texas Beautiful, Duncanville does a lot to clean up their streets, parks, walkways and buildings.

The city spends more than 6,500 hours a year maintaining landscaping throughout the city. Wit ha full-time horticulturist responsible for designing and maintaining landscaping, you will find gorgeous flower beds, water fountains, plush green fields and walkways around every corner.

The parks and recreation department also maintains 216 acres of parkland and plants 50,000 bulbs every year creating glorious and majestic scenes around the city all year round - and people are taking notice.

Duncanville is experiencing a ton of growth and the local government, fire, police and other departments provide helpful and speedy service to their citizens.
