WEEKLY ENCOURAGEMENT

We all recognize an attitude of gratitude. This month we celebrate gratitude, thankfulness, and generosity culminating in Thanksgiving Day. One way to do that is to “pay it forward.” This is the decision to respond when someone has acted generously toward you—not by paying back that person—but accepting their gift and then extending the same generosity toward someone else. Benjamin Franklin said it like this in 1784 to a friend whose business was in financial trouble. He explained that he wasn’t giving him the money, only lending it, with the following terms: “When you meet with another honest Man in similar Distress, you must pay me by lending this Sum to him; enjoining him to discharge the Debt by a like operation, when he is able.” He explains—this is a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money.

What if we, as members of the Duncanville Chamber, had that sort of attitude of generosity? How would that raise our consciousness of gratitude? What better time to be thankful for all we have, no matter how small. And who knows how we all might benefit when we help each other by giving?
